Frequently asked questions
What is Rhythm about?
Rhythm is a documentary short about Floyd Kennedy, a Sacramento percussion teacher who built the Natomas High School drumline from paint buckets and boards into a nationally recognized program. When he is abruptly forced into retirement and faces a profound crisis, he must reevaluate his legacy to continue teaching.
The film explores mentorship, arts education, belonging, discipline, Black musical heritage, and the butterfly effect of one educator: how one consistent adult and one accessible arts program can shape student success for decades.
How long is the film?
Rhythm runs 21 minutes, which leaves time for a guided discussion in a one-hour event. A 3-minute excerpt is also available for classrooms and meetings, with more to come.
